This class will teach you about the inner workings of the fashion industry, whether it's working at a magazine, newspaper, or for a fashion television show. You will get the inside scoop on the variety of jobs available to you at every level, how to break in, and succeed as a professional. By providing insight into the different jobs, their descriptions, and using profiles of the successful professionals who have made their mark, you will be inspired and better informed when making a decision about what is more suited to your skills and interests. Throughout the class you will work on your portfolio, gathering spec work, generating ideas for pitches, and using the Internet to present yourself at every experience level. You will learn how to create blogs, podcasts, and even your own online magazine.

In this class, you will learn:

  • The differences between visual editors, section editors, photo production editors, and writers at magazines and newspapers
  • The job descriptions, average salaries and daily responsibilities of each post
  • How and where to break into the industry without experience
  • The advantages of starting out as a freelancer
  • What it takes to become an Editor in Chief and how you can start your own fashion blog, magazine, and online fashion e-newsletter
  • How a fashion magazine is produced each month, from cover shoot to photo shoots
  • How to become a fashion stylist
  • The protocol necessary to succeed, excel, and network in the industry

By the end of this class, you will have:
A concrete plan and path for their career in fashion media, a portfolio of existing work, a list of target publications and agents (for stylists).

This class focuses on the different jobs, career paths, and avenues for both editors that are visually oriented and those who may want to be involved in the production of a fashion magazine or website.

Admission Requirements:
Please submit a letter of interest (including a brief work history).
